Another good looks of a generation
It been an awful couple of weeks for brand new York writing women, both real and imaginary.
First came an anticipatory backlash to the big-screen debut of Carrie Bradshaw, the fictional and expensively shod sex columnist heroine of and the City. In the years since HBO created its hit show based on Candace Bushnell Ny Observer column, Carrie and her over-sexed girlfriends have to the dismay of numerous women who reside in their city or toil within their professions become tutu cartoons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], representing the assumptions people make about what single, professional straight women should be like: They're materialistic, horny squealers, hungry for brunch and husbands. Apparently, plenty of women who don feel in the slightest bit represented by the ladies aren't thrilled to determine them back again, this time around plastered throughout their multiplexes. Break Ny even ran a tale whose cover featured the show stars in cocktail dress, with duct tape over their mouths.
Over at the popular women blog Jezebel, managing editor Anna Holmes reasonably queried, pray tell, am damn groundbreaking in regards to a group of narcissistic rich white women with a passion for shopping and gossiping about their sex lives? Last week, Holmes handed the task of watching all six seasons from the series to blogger Emily Gould, an old Gawker editor who prides herself on having coined the term Sadshaw in derisive mention of the the show, its adherents and, in her words, the thirtysomething women who desperately need TV role models to warrant their one night stands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shoe-splurges, and bloggy confessions about same. Gould early posts from the front lines were comically dismissive of the show, illustrated with an image of Parker as Bradshaw,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lying in a rumpled bed, wearing a fish tank top, and pointing her finger to her head like a gun.
How appropriate. Within the same week that Gould was covering this terrain, she graced the cover from the Ny Times Magazine tank-topped, tattooed and lounging inverted in mussed bedsheets. The cheesecakey cover shot advertised Gould first-person story, an 8,000-word exploration of what Gould and lost by divulging details of her romantic and sexual life on the web. The very readable piece had the voyeuristic feel of a precocious, neurotic teen diaristic musings; it had been all crushy and naive, with ample reference to breakup sex and therapy and anxiety attacks.
Reaction to Gould story was even chillier than Gould regard for Bradshaw and her buddies. The typically staid Times comments section roiled with readers who have been practically apoplectic within their loathing for Gould. And a woman claiming to become Gould age wrote, stop embarrassing our generation with mindless prattle.
In the days surrounding the publication from the piece, Gould critique turned increasingly self-referential. Her history of ragging on Sadshaw was quickly becoming ironic. Gould hated Carrie and her ilk to be shallow, self-absorbed, exhibitionistic, moony over men; now readers hated Gould for all the same reasons!
What provokes such fury, over Carrie Bradshaw, and for a flash over Gould (barring a book deal and Television show that will turn her meanderings into cultural furniture) is that in a media landscape in which there are a severely limited number of spaces for women writing voices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those that get tapped become necessarily, and deeply inaccurately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], emblematic of their gender,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their generation, their profession. More annoying and twisted is that those meager spots for women are consistently filled by those willing to expose themselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], visually and emotionally. And not accidentally, by those willing to expose themselves in a manner that is comfortable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and frequently alluring, to many of the men who control the media, and to many of the women who consume it. Maddening to have to wonder Carrie Bradshaw-style if Gould story would have run had she not been beautiful, and maddening to then hate oneself to have needed to wonder that at all.
But perhaps most maddening may be the way the buildup of critical attention to a piece like Gould or to a cultural phenomenon like only affirms that certain kinds of women, in support of those kinds of women, count elevating to start with, in part due to the delight people consume tearing them down.
Take a look at the days own Q session, by which Gould answered questions from readers. this been a wakeup call for you that nobody likes you some of this? I certainly don I couldn even bear to complete reading your site (yes, it is a blog, no article) went one Another reader you, Joni Mitchell was extremely self-referential. Lots of people liked this at first, but they eventually grew tired of it. When she finally stopped covering herself and turned her attention elsewhere, most people had already lost interest and managed to move on. Would you worry that the same task may happen for you?
Regardless of how angry you felt about Gould piece,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it had been nearly impossible to read the comments and not feel terrible: for her, about her, and about yourself for having even peeked. The operation is exhausting, and never good for anyone, especially ladies who find yourself in trouble with some lame avatar they think doesn't represent them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but whom they don't particularly seem like burning in the stake just for being clever, lucky or talented enough to wind up drawing a spotlight.
We must remember: There's nothing wrong with females covering themselves, their youth, their indiscretions, their habits and values and private development. Men have been writing about this stuff for centuries; they call it canon's.
And similar to their male contemporaries, a lot of this writing disappoints. When it does, there's nothing wrong with criticizing it. The thing that is wrong really wrong happens when we forget these types of stories are not the only ones that ladies need to tell.
So rather than being troubled because Gould or Bushnell, or Bradshaw, or whoever has the spotlight, why don't you question why so few other versions of femininity can share it?
