ICC Cricket World Cup 2011
Colombo is a town of tangible contrasts. Having been colonised successively by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, it has a number of architecture. Almost as varied would be the many temples and churches that are a testimony towards the religious diversity from the island.
The hubbub of steamy Pettah,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with market vendors vying loudly for trade, are a world apart from the rarefied atmosphere of the huge whitewashed houses of Colombo 7. Weaving together the varied facets of the town would be the ubiquitous tuk-tuks, which swerve around buses and cars with complete nonchalance.
As laidback and easygoing as this city is, it's strict about observing Buddhist holidays. Poya days, which celebrate the entire moon, are close-down public holidays (on September 29) - if you need your drink, make sure to stock up in advance, as no alcohol is served on nowadays. That's the case with the R Premadasa Stadium too, where local beer can be obtained on other days. So as you can eat the short eats and sip sodas, you will need to respect the hosts' sentiments and stay away from alcohol. It's the least it's possible to do to reciprocate the warmth and hospitality every Sri Lankan will extend to the foreign cricket fan.
Colombo is choc-a-bloc with tuk-tuks. Find a driver you prefer and stay with him. Expect to pay about Rs 50 per km. Going to the Premadasa Stadium, in the north-eastern part of the city, shouldn't are more expensive than Rs 500 from any kind of town. Tip between Rs 20 and Rs 50 if you are pleased with the service.
Metered tuk-tuks are available. The very first kilometre costs Rs 50, and each successive one Rs 32. Waiting charges are Rs 90 each hour. The rates for that new Nano mini-cabs are the same. Should you hire a tuk-tuk without a meter, make sure you negotiate a price first.
If you want an air-conditioned taxi, Kangaroo Cabs or Ace Cabs are reliable options.
Unfortunately there are no hotels within the densely populated area immediately around the Premadasa Stadium. But with the exception of these two hotels in Mount Lavinia (around 16km away), the following are all within 8km of the ground.
High-end The Galle Face Hotel (from about Rs 26,000) is really a beautiful colonial hotel, perfect to watch the sun permeate the Indian Ocean from. There's a lovely salt-water pool next to the ocean. Anilana Park Street Hotel (from Rs 28,500) is a stunning boutique hotel that oozes style and class, housed in a colonial bungalow. Casa Colombo is dubbed retro chic - 12 suites in a gaudily transformed 200-year-old mansion, tucked down a cul-de-sac from the Galle Road (from about Rs 26,000). Colombo Coutyard is ideally located on Alfred House Avenue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has macho décor (railway sleepers, metal sculptures),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], free wifi in sensibly furnished bedrooms, a wine cellar, all-day restaurant, and rooftop bar/restaurant terrace. (from about Rs 26,000). Then there are hotels that cricket teams usually remain in: Cinnamon Grand and also the Taj Samudra, both charging upwards of Rs 20,000 an evening.
Mid-level The Mount Lavinia Hotel (from about Rs 16,500) is of the distance in the stadium, but a sumptuous hotel. The first kind home from the British governor, it has a private beach with a great fish restaurant. The Colombo City Hotel (from Rs 15,000) offers comfortable accommodation in the heart of the town. The Grand Oriental Hotel (from about Rs 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500) overlooks Colombo's busy commercial port but includes a lovely, relaxed atmosphere along with a delightful rooftop bar. The Indra Regent Hotel (from about Rs 8500) is really a safe bet in a good location. Global Towers on Station Avenue offers 140 air-conditioned rooms and 54 a/c apartments overlooking the Marine Highway and railway line, and also houses the most popular Trainspotters restaurant (from about Rs 17,500). Hotel Renuka, on the Galle Road, is really a pleasant hotel favoured by package tourists, and conveniently located (from about Rs 11,000).
Budget In the middle of Colombo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hotel Omega Inn (from Rs 4000) is a popular stop-off point for young travelers. Chanuka Guesthouse (Tel 94-11-2585883; from Rs 2200),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], run with a slightly mad but utterly charming Lankan couple, is a good option when the purse strings are tight. Nippon Hotel is in the centre of Colombo's sleazy district, with wrought-iron balcony railings and an old-fashioned ambience (from Rs 3600). Hotel Westeern [sic] offers a/c and non-a/c accommodation in small rooms by Colombo's Marine Drive highway and the railway line (from about Rs 3500).
Colombo provides a delicious range, both by way of price and cuisines. There are a few street cafés and food vendors close to the stadium, but to get the most from Colombo's cuisine, you will have to travel a few kilometres south-west up to the more fashionable end of town.
High-end Tintagel on Rosemead Place serves superb international cuisine in a beautiful setting. Make sure to bring your own alcohol, though. Visit Spoons in the Hilton Colombo Hotel because of its great wine cellar, superb steaks and oysters and a quality cheeseboard. The London Grill offers European fine dining in the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Perfect for if you want a chateaubriand to cherish. Ministry of Crab, part-owned by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, is being acclaimed as Colombo's finest with great food (and that is not only crab). The first kind office of Sri Lanka's most prominent architect, Geoffrey Bawa, Gallery Café is really a super stylish eatery on Alfred House Road.
Mid-level Loon Tao is a Lankan-Chinese fusion restaurant set about the beach in Dehiwela, one's heart of suburban Colombo. Raja Bojun serves authentic Lankan food in a buffet style. The Cricket Club Café is the cricket lover's choice for lunch or dinner. It features a moderately priced menu with dishes named after cricketers and cricket memorabilia decorating the walls, an extended room restaurant, garden café, snack parlour and backroom pub. Barefoot Garden Café, hidden behind the Barefoot store on Galle Road, includes a relaxed atmosphere, great snacks, a jazz band playing for supper on Sundays, and a pub quiz on Wednesdays. Most nights it swings until late with an enthusiastic crowd of partygoers. Coco Citrine, run by gregarious Viko and his Greek staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is open everyday. It's like a a Mediterranean sidewalk café, where guests are urged to linger for as long as that like over drinks or coffee and modestly priced Italian-style dishes.
Budget Rahamania Palace (Tel 94-11-5639919) serves north Indian food of enormous taste and size. The mutton biryani is a must. Big Bite Biryani is really a superior chain of street cafés serving tasty barbequed Pakistani cuisine. Green Cabin (Tel 94-11-5888811) serves great vegetarian curries as well as an enormous lunch buffet.
Colombo is an accommodating city for those wishing to let their head of hair down. The places to party in downtown Colombo are mainly within a 3km radius, there are venues to match all budgets. Just away from city, Mount Lavinia provides a taste of what lies further south on the island.
High-end 7° North is the hottest bar around, with cocktails,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tapas and great live music. Gentlemen must wear long trousers and shoes; ladies dress to impress. Lemon Bar (Tel 94-771554149) is really a stylish rooftop venue. The Silk nightclub is underneath and the combination could make for a great night out. Your wine Lounge at the Galle Face Hotel is down a tight spiral staircase in the hotel's smart 1864 restaurant, while offering new world vintages from shelves lining the walls. Loft, at the Colombo Courtyard Hotel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has tractor seats for bar stools, a smoking section, obliging service, cocktails and music.
Mid-level Bellagio Casino is the greatest casino around, with most bets starting at Rs 500. Union Bar and Grill at the Hilton Residences, is really a lively spot for partying all evening. TV screens play cricket matches too, and there's spill-over space in the building's entrance lobby. At Rhythm Blues the background music and partying never appear to end, and members can draw on bottles banked in private lockers. Golden Mile in Mount Lavinia is really a restaurant on the beach having a bar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a late-night party atmosphere underneath the stars.
Budget White Horse is an extremely lively pub in which a young crowd would go to enjoy the cheap drinks and fast-paced atmosphere. Not for that faint-hearted. Clancy's Pub (Tel: 0094-11-2682945) includes a wide variety of bands, affordable drinks and good pub grub. The Brewery by O! has a cobbled courtyard in which drinkers until 2am, knocking back cocktails or quaffing mugs of beer from self-service towers. Beer is also available on Galle Face Green at food kiosks across the promenade. Or take your own and hunker recorded on the grass for a starlit picnic party with delicious spicy nibbles from vendors.
